Fulfilling Obligation in Vocation | Reflection

“Our Lord has created persons for all states in life, and in all of them we see people who achieved sanctity by fulfilling their obligations well.” -St. Anthony Mary Claret

I’ve said this a million times, and I will continue to say it until the day God takes me home. – You are created for a purpose. Before you were formed in the womb, God knew your name, and set a path for you to walk, to fulfill some mission to glorify Him, and his kingdom.

This truth which is hard to grasp for some, is easily seen and understood when we look at the lives of the saints. Thousands upon thousands of men and women, of all backgrounds, ethnicities, ages, all who are given the glorious title of “saint” which is, by most accounts, the ultimate fulfillment of what we may aspire towards.

But the thing to focus on here is that each and every one of their stories, these saints, is different. While some saints were priests with miraculous, visible, instances of God working through them, think Padre Pio and the Stigmata, others may have never been consecrated to the religious life, but still combated demons – think St Gemma.

And the thousands of other examples in between. All different stories, all different backgrounds, but they all shared one similar aspect.

Fulfillment of their obligation to whatever state of life they were in – which could also be understood as complete surrender and uniformity to Gods will.

So you don’t have to try to be like a certain saint (although it is good to aspire to mimic the virtues they exhibited) because God has a plan for you. You and your story could be repeated through time, inspiring others who find solace and comfort in hearing YOUR story. The story that the writer of all creation is still writing…

Untie your will to Gods, fulfill the obligations of your state of life. Be a saint.
